New DVSA Rule: Why You Must Now Book Your Own Driving Test in Sheffield

If you’re approaching your practical driving test — whether you’re taking automatic lessons or any other type — there is an important rule change from 2026 that directly affects how your test gets booked. Since 12 May 2026, only you, the learner driver, can book and manage your own practical driving test. Your instructor cannot do it for you, and neither can anyone else.

At Automatic Driving Lessons Sheffield (ADLS), we want every one of our learners to understand this change clearly so there are no surprises when your test date approaches.

What Exactly Has Changed?

The DVSA introduced a series of changes to the driving test booking system across 2026, all aimed at improving fairness and reducing artificial scarcity caused by third-party booking services. The confirmed changes that affect you as a learner are:

  • From 31 March 2026: You can only change your test booking a maximum of twice (previously six changes were permitted). A change covers altering the date, time, or test centre.
  • From 12 May 2026: Only you can book, change, or cancel your own driving test. When you book via the official DVSA booking service on GOV.UK, you must confirm through a declaration that you are the learner taking the test.
  • From 9 June 2026: If you move your test to a different centre, you can only transfer to one of the three nearest test centres to your original booking location.

These changes were introduced by the DVSA to crack down on commercial third parties who were bulk-buying test slots and reselling them at inflated prices — sometimes many hundreds of pounds above the official DVSA fee. The official fee remains £62 for weekday tests and £75 for evening, weekend, and bank holiday tests. Those are the only prices you should ever pay.

What Does This Mean in Practice?

For most ADLS learners, this change is straightforward to navigate. Your instructor will work with you on timing and readiness — telling you when they believe you’re approaching test standard and discussing realistic test dates. The key difference now is that you then go onto GOV.UK and make the actual booking yourself.

To book your test, you’ll need:

  • Your UK provisional driving licence number
  • Your theory test pass certificate number (you must have passed the theory test before you can book the practical)
  • Your credit or debit card for the test fee
  • A preferred date range and test centre location

The booking process on GOV.UK is straightforward — you’ll select your nearest test centre, choose from available dates and times, and confirm your booking with a declaration that you are the learner sitting the test.

Can Your Instructor Still Help?

Absolutely. The new rules prevent instructors from booking or managing the test on your behalf through the system — but your instructor is still your most valuable source of guidance on when you’re ready, what test centre to aim for, and how to think about your test date in relation to your remaining lessons. We’ll walk you through everything you need to know and be available to answer any questions before you make the booking.

The Two-Change Limit: Book Wisely

With only two permitted changes available, it’s worth booking your test at a point when you have a reasonably firm timeline in place — not months before you expect to be ready. If your lessons are going well and your instructor suggests you’re approaching readiness, that’s the right time to look at test availability and commit to a date.

If you’re considering our intensive automatic driving courses, we’ll help you plan the course-to-test sequence carefully from the start so your two permitted changes are a safety net rather than a necessity.

Check Test Availability and Book Directly

Always book your test through the official DVSA channel at gov.uk/book-driving-test. Any third-party service offering to book on your behalf or selling slots above the official fee is operating outside DVSA terms and conditions under the 2026 rules.
